phpFox2 Alpha 1 Released
The time has come for us to publicly release a glimpse of what phpFox2 will introduce in the coming months.
phpFox2 has undergone a complete code rewrite and database reconstruction. It is basically a new product that will import all your data stored in your phpFox 1.x database tables into the new database tables provided with phpFox2.
If you haven’t been following the progress of phpFox2 since the opening of our blog not to long ago feel free to catch up. We added some entries on how phpFox2 will work as well as some of the features we plan on introducing.
This first Alpha release is intended solely for developers that plan on developing applications for phpFox2 once it goes stable. The goal for this release is to give developers a head start to understand how phpFox2 will work so they can start planning on updating their current products to be compatible once phpFox2 goes stable. However, if you are not a developer and have a license with us you are more then welcome to download the product from our clients area. If you have the time to start reporting bugs that would be great.
Currently the Alpha release available for download includes the Core Engine and a few of the modules that will be part of the complete social networking package. Note that this is in no way the final product nor is this product in anyway complete. Many of the features we provided with the Alpha release are still not completed and many of the sections/functions are not functional as they simply haven’t been developed yet. We will be releasing updates for the Alpha download so testers can use the latest code from our repository once certain sections/functions have been added/fixed.
So far we wrote several blog entries explaining how the core engine will function, however we haven’t really got into what sort of features will be available. We are still keeping as much as we can until we get to our first beta release out as this will be the complete package ready for testing.
To view the PDF outline of what phpFox2 currently offers with this Alpha release you can download it here. We will update this PDF over the next few days to add all the features available with this release, however we currently complied a list of the must important features included with this release.
To view the phpFox2 in action you can check out our Alpha demo here.
phpFox2 Alpha 1 can be downloaded from our clients area. When you have selected a license and reached the download page look for “phpFox2 Alpha 1″ to download the product.
We worked up a quick developers manual over at our wiki. Much like our product the manual is in its Alpha state and needs a lot more work, however we provided the basic information on how to install the product and create a product; which includes a sample module and plugin. Based on the communities feedback and questions that will come up over the next few days we can accumulate enough information on what more we can add to our manual.
A known annoyance so far is the menus with the AdminCP do not work correctly with IE6, they should however work fine with IE7. We have focused all our time developing on Firefox using Linux so there isn’t much support for IE at the moment, however once we go Beta we will have support for all the common web browsers as well as web servers.
I need to reiterate that this is an Alpha release and that it is in no way supported or guaranteed to work for you on your server. phpFox2 has not been bug tested thoroughly, this is a product that has come straight from a developers IDE onto public servers so you will encounter many problems from the get go so be prepared.
Your feedback is appreciated as the purpose of this release is to see what the communities thinks of the new engine before we get too far along with the development process to make changes to it.
Good Luck & Enjoy!

I hope it has an option to have First and Last Names as separate fields with the option to have the A-Z ether as first name or last name search, preferred by last name, see http://www.Sonico.com for ideas. They have some good features I hope you guys implement with 2.0, but I’m loving it. Good job guys…

looks like a good start. I can’t stress enough that I think the most important thing is going to be how profile types can be distinguished and searched. For instance, if you make a user type called Bands… or Plumbers.. or whatever… there should be a directory page that lists the different user types and then you should be able to click an actual URL that will take you to a filtered member search based on that user type. This way, if I want to use it as a community script people can sign up as a lawyer, musician, plumber, restaurant, whatever… and then people can click on and browse/search all lawyers or whatever… Optimally there really should be the capability for categories AND subcategories… They then should be able to search by zip code (or even better zip code radius - another MUCH needed improvement.) It is these things that will really make phpfox workable to me and TRULY a social networking tool. Social networking is no longer just about random friends, but about finding people that will meet your needs. It is so silly for us to have to loosely integrate phpmydirectory or something like that to make the community work. I hope everyone followed everything I just said. I’d love to hear your comments and if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Hi Peter, Thanks for your comment and suggestions. The idea you have in mind is definitely something we would like to implement and we will make sure to look into this area of development a little deeper.
A strong search engine for users is something we are working on and filtering by custom user types will make it even stronger.

I am not a programmer but have been looking all over the web for a prepackaged solution after spending thousands on my last site and Peter’s desired feature set is exactly the desired feature that has kept me looking….i was just about to spring for phpfox and that this is not doable is a major issue since the site would be all about different predetermined ‘types’ of users signing in and displaying their ‘affiliation’ as belonging to their ‘type’ above all else in terms of importance. Does that make sense? Anyway, Peter’s comment made a lot of sense to me and I hope that his suggestions will be implement (or can be modified in) by the time I get started on this project.

Perhaps Im not fully understanding but I do think user types are needed, its the way to tell who has paid for a better membership, or who deserves a different profile or who has permissions to edit a forum post… maybe if you can elaborate on that…

I believe he means for a better word “MemberGroups” and “Secondary Permissions”. Let’s start with what Peter said. Ideally the “browse” page should have a feature to sort by “MemberGroups”. So somewhere on the main browse member page should be a sort filter with options to sort by MemberGroup, asc/desc and how many results to display per page.
I think adding tabs for each MemberGroup is a bit clunky and unnecessary but a simple drop menu with a go button to filter the results should improve the method. Also, there should be a A-Z bar to click to pull up members names beginning with that letter. This and the sort menus would be what I call quick search features or perhaps advanced search features but in any case separate from the normal browse by features.
Now back to what Pierre comment… Right now there is no secondary permissions or ability out the box to create another MemberGroup that has same permission masks as MemberGroup1 but secondary permissions allow for that member to have special permissions while still retaining a memberGroup1 title. This situation is ideal for undercover staff or in situations where you don’t want to upset the community by giving a public promotion. This sounds like a usertype mod, but it is not. If you ditch the term usertype and think of managing MemberGroups with permissions and secondary permissions will make complete sense especially in the manner of how most sotfware operate. The term “usertypes” I believe has confused the idea of simplicity and overcomplicated how things can be done in a cleaner method.
Just incase you might ask, MemberGroups ie Bands, Members, Artists and etc.
UserGroups is communities ie Fetishes, Nighlife, Political.
I hope this makes sense?
After seeing the demo i got a couple of questions such as well there be a video, gallery, forums, groups, events, music
well the video section have RSS feed better SEO? (phpmotion)
Well the gallery section be like a album or just regular will the gallery have a embed code?
What type of forums will there be phpbb3, vbullet, lightweight forums?

event will u be able to change events field?
Profiles will there be more customizable?

Yes, the sections you mentioned will be part of the completed phpFox2 package.
I have left my replies under each of your questions below.
well the video section have RSS feed better SEO?
– Our goal is to have improved SEO in the entire script and not just the video section, so yes improved SEO for videos as well as RSS feed support.
Well the gallery section be like a album or just regular will the gallery have a embed code?
– It will have album support.
What type of forums will there be phpbb3, vbullet, lightweight forums?
– We will be developing our own robust forum module, which we are hoping will be able to compete with some of the big guns like phpBB and vB. However, since phpFox2 is being designed to be a developer friend system there is no reason why a plug-in could not be developed to integrate phpFox2 with other forums such as vB, phpBB, IPB.
Groups section will it be customizable?
– In what way did you mean? Like the group categories? If yes, then it will be as this can also be done with v1.6.x
event will u be able to change events field?
– We haven’t looked much into the events module, however I added a note to look into adding custom fields for the events module. We would like to add custom fields to all modules so in a way the answer to this question is yes.
Profiles will there be more customizable?
– Yes, the profiles will be fully controlled by the user from their content to how its designed once the product is completed.
music section well the player be able to be taken off site? will the player be customizable?
– We plan on integrating several players with the script and not just one player so this gives the option for Admins to choose the best player they want to use for their site.
if you have old blog an video from old phpfox version will the new seo setup work or must u go an correct 1 by 1?
– Old data will be imported into the new product and their is support for URL rewriting so old links can be moved over to new links to keep SEO.

Oh okay, yes it will be possible to customize group layouts with v2.
Hello, great job with the phpfox 2 apha1.. I’m ready to buy licences as soon I got an anwer of you:
Will there be photo ALBUMS in phpfox2 and again just a Gallery? Our community is used to create albums for their diffrent parts of life (like my sweden holidays 2007, my family, my friends, only me, new year party 2008, etc…)
And they are used to upload up to 500 pics for each album. With just a Gallery like it is in PHPfox 1.6, everything would be unsorted and mixed.
Please let me know if they are coming photo ALBUMS for phpfox 2 beta, then be sure you’ll get me as a new and long time customer.

Hi CM, thanks for your comment.
Yes, photo albums I can confirm will be part of phpFox2. We have big plans for the photo module and album support is on top of the list of things to complete. It will also include the option to upload multiple images and not just one image at a time.
Hope you join our community.

Oh that’s sooooooo great°!!!!!
Me and our community will join you!!
Two more little wishes from our community, specially from our female members:
1) Possibility how to show the age of an user:
a) Show full date of birth in own profile
b) Show only day and month (hide year)
c) Show only age (hide date)
d) Hide complete date and age
2) Private Message History (Show conversation of last 20 - 30 messages with the friend they wrote)
All in all, I think you are on the right way with phpfox 2!! Very great done so far!

Not a problem, glad you are looking forward for v2.
For the changes brought up with #1, these all can definitely be done.I have added that to our to-do list.
For #2, by default we will release our current method of displaying messages; however we plan on releasing a plugin for a “Conversation” method of displaying messages similar to how Facebook has it.
[Reply]
Oh thank you for such a quick response on my question to further explain what I was referring about the group section was allowing users to be able to add there own background images adding banner type header maybe moving the shoutbox.
I also forgot to mention a couple of other question when u say different player for the music section will member be able to pick there player? Will admin be able to add custom player?
Regarding the forums features that I think would help are the follow:
upload of files
Required regiestration to download files
set number of post before downloading
Blog section:
Love the new features I saw in the demo but was thing would the blog section allow each user to customize there own blog by adding background header side panel exct.. like wordpress MU? DEMO http://blogs.ign.com/
Rating System
I think one of the biggest let down with phpfox 1.5.1 is the ranking system or the stars as we all call them I think something that would define excatly how it works to user would be great or instead of stars make where members earn medals I will provide a example of what am reffering too.

My Emblems:

Not a problem.
The video flash player we had in mind would be selected by the site Admins.
The forum features you mentioned will be added except for the “set number of post before downloading”. I have added that into our specs and we will see if we can work this feature in by our beta release, if not then I am sure we can add it before it goes stable,
For the blog section, that is a good idea. We will see what we can do.
Regarding the rating system, we are looking into ways to improve the system and I have added your suggestion to our list.
Thank you for your feedback

This sounds very promising. I think that Aitoc should spend some time developing and supporting integrations with 3rd party scripts that would be outside the scope of the core phpfox script but would greatly benefit many communities… especially mediawiki. It’d be great to get these integrations/plugins from the company closest to phpfox development. My community would be incredible if I could integrate it with mediawiki.. I used to have a bridge through the vb plugin but that was just too much madness to keep working. Any thoughts?

Aitoc will be working on some new mods for phpFox2 and mediawiki support would be great. I will put in a good word. If you start up a thread in our forums and get enough members to support the mod I am sure they will invest the funds to create such a mod for the community.

Hi,
I’m still using v1.1 with long urls. I have 100.000 pages indexed in google. If I upgrade will I loose all that indexes?
An example:
A forum topic from groups have this string:
/groups/?id=235&link=view_topic&topic_id=7145&group_id=235
After upgrading this string will still be working or I will loose it?

I was talking this over with Purefan earlier today and we are going to be working on a rewrite engine that will support URL from v1.1 or higher. We definitely don’t want any of our clients to lose their search engine indexes so we are going to be working hard on perfecting this system. The goal is to properly send bots to the new item.

Well with the new engine and the extensive documentation we’re working on this should be fairly easy. If you’ve been reading the wiki (http://wiki.phpfox.com/guide/V2) you can see it is pretty easy to register modules with other controllers and such so you can indeed have duplicated exact versions in several parts of the site, and creating new ones is much easier than before

How will the photos and user picture be? will it be auto crop to make them all into one size ? will there be a “Sorry image to small” filter? or something that will make the pictures all into one size to make the site look more clean and organize ?

The current profile picture is very basic, however we plan on adding a crop feature where users can crop their images to their liking. We had used the current method of displaying profile images since we started phpFox, however the box method of displaying images (like on Facebook) are becoming the industry standard so we plan on using that method as our default method and our current method as an option.
Thanks for the link, we will give it a look.

We are currently partnered with UserPlane and working on an integration for v2. It is not final which chat script we plan on using, however UserPlane looks very promising. We plan on releasing our own AJAX Chat & IM as well for those that don’t plan on using a 3rd party Chat/IM script.

I just notice that the emails I get from the demo are going to my Bulk folder,(Hotmail Account), also are the emails going to have more info, like for example user picture, nicer welcome look, html, colors, pictures, logo. Stop Emails options stuff like that; make it more appealing for the users?
Also will we have a good inviter script, email importer like http://www.octazen.com/ or will you guys build your own? I would like to have an option where if a users has send and invite the admin can have the options to resend all emails at once or at intervals of 50-100-200-500-1000, or if the invite gets a week, two weeks or a month old to be re-send automatically, with the message as like “Tony is waiting to be your fiend at mysite.com” or something like that.
Also I hope we have a better Chat and better IM since people don’t seem to like the ones we have now, not that many options and hard to find since they are on top, according to my users, maybe if it was more of a option in the main menu and have it on a page and not a pop-up would be a better way of having a chat, more like the South Out Box since my users seem to use that more as a chat than the regular chat.
Also are you guys thinking of ad optimization for better ad exposure?

phpfoxman Reply:

agree with the above comment a singup with a invite friends feature would be great like facebook or myspace.
Also the chat script should be better then before flashchat an prochatrooms have way to many bugs, and the one that comes with the 1.6 script is to boring. I would recommend 123flashchat can be viewed here http://www.123flashchat.com/ V.7
As far as the IM I think best way to go is to add the Ajax IM found here.
http://www.ajaxim.com/
You know now that u mentioned the shout box u know what would be awesome if members of groups can customize the shout box like add a background or color to fit there liking an what would make it even better if they could take the shout box of site. Just a Idea
[Reply]
Purefan Reply:

Currently the emails sent from the site can be customized from the admin panel and we will have this option too in version 2, as for the spam filter that has been addressed in the forums a few times and in general its a problem that can be fixed with a SPF record, the SPF record should be added by your hosting company but its free to get (maybe not free to implement though).
The chat and IM are definitively going to be improved, in what specific ways we have not defined yet but we definitively are going to improve them.
The ads we want to allow displaying per age, per region… those kind of filters, not the content of course since this is something you control from the actual ad provider (AdBrite, AdSense…)
Also, we currently in v1.6 have the invite section which works (dare I say?) “exactly” like octazen.com and this will be a feature available in version 2 for sure.
The groups will also be very feature full and their shoutbox also will be easy to customize. For the site shoutbox thats just a template file which can be easily edited so no extra work there

I was wonder if there’s a way to kinda copy the way bebo dose profiles for exmaple making them more customs an allowing members to share there profile layout with others? How about adding a RPG type game to the site since myspace is kicking must social networks butt with this feature
[Reply]
Purefan Reply:

Problem is, that would render a site too niche specific, if we add something like an RPG game and the site is about Financing it doesnt make sense between those two, or if we add a financing specific feature then it wouldnt make sense to the gaming sites.
Those would have to be plugins or add ons, but as for the avatar we could implement a drop down list with some default images
[Reply]
Will it be possible to set up a real couple’s profile, with two profile pictures etc, or could this be achieved with a module or something like that.
I’d really hate to mess with the core.
One more thing. How about an auto responder. I travel a lot and are not always able to get acccess to a computer. Once I get back I have a ton of emails with messages why I haven’t responded.
So being able to write a standard message, and turn the auto responder on/off would be really cool.
[Reply]
Purefan Reply:
January 21st, 2009 at 6:47 am
The whole idea with version 2 is to give developers the ability to do anything without altering the source code, in the documentation (wiki) there are/will be specific tutorials. We’re working on having the best documentation possible since the new engine is so kind and giving that it is possible to do pretty much anything (if not anything) without touching the core script’s source code.
So yeah, for this and the auto responder I think those can be add ons because not every site would need such a thing, for example a gaming site wouldnt need couples profiles in general and most communities are pretty active with members logging in at least once a week so the auto responder isnt too useful for them.
Reason why very specific features like this we need to mark as add ons is because if we do focus on developing them we’re leaving others perhaps more requested/needed out.
But its very welcome your feedback, perhaps others havent seen this need until you brought it up and the votes start coming in
or third party developers can see a profit here too and in the end your solution will be created

The thing is that, any release before the final one is prone to be buggy, in fact it should be considered buggy, so installing those betas or RCs is not a good idea for a production site, if you want to develop things then yes go ahead. In any case, the alpha is already available from the clients area and the next releases will be also available from the clients area. So if you really want to give this a try you dont have to wait

Okay one thing that would help phpfox sites is adding automatic feed where for example the admin can pick RSS an have the auto post blogs and videos I know SE already has this feature but I think this would help a lot of site out to get better traffic. Can this be done for phpfox 2 this is one off my main issues to decide which script to purchase as I need a automatic feed to video section like phpmotions has and a blog automatic feed like wordpress. Thank you I also like the comment of a free plugin if we beta test the script.

Hello phpmedia,
This is actually a feature in 1.6 and will definitively be a feature in version 2.
Could you explain further your idea of a comment plugin?

So there will be a feature that would allow me to submit a RSS feed from a different site an it will post Blogs an Videos for me if so I’m sold I will be purchasing it if this features available just wanted to reconfirm

Purefan Reply:

The feature is that the site generates RSS feeds that can be read in desktop software or google reader. So your content gets published through internet (which is what drives traffic to your site)
how do you log into the Alpha demo whats the user name and password

You create a username and password. ie you have to register there.
[Reply]
Is there going to be improved admin panel like a feature too see a members password which you cannot do now.

ClubUgly Reply:

Why would you want to see a users password? I don’t know of any software that violates this privacy. Maybe change their password but not view it. There passwords could be linked to other accounts across the web and by you having access to it can violate one of their other accounts. Would you want someone having the pin to your banc card or facebook login?

Purefan Reply:

yeah actually seeing a password is a bad, bad idea… but since ever you from the admin panel are able to Member Snoop into anyone’s account.
If you’re wondering about the security there is really no way to crack a password, it uses several one-way encoding techniques that given just the password makes it uncrackable (in theory at least).

Log into the demo it looks realy plain at the moment is this just a fast look at it?

Yes, thats why it’s called alpha release. After that is a few more alphas, then a few betas, then a few RC’s and finally the vs 2.0.0 Final - So we are about 9 -10 releases away

Purefan Reply:

Yeah hold your horses mate
the alpha is just to show how the engine works and allow developers to get acquainted with it. Nothing in regards to how it looks should be taken seriously in an alpha release. Like a guy in the General Discussion for version 2 forum said “the alpha is all about the engine, html is the least of our worries”

Now that some one mentioned the admin panel there a feature on some other scripts in which it notifies the admin when multi IP register for example if someone is creating fake accounts it notifies the admin that that IP has more the 2 accounts.
[Reply]
Well we can do that but you need to post it in the feature request forum at http://forums.phpfox.com if it gets enough votes we will implement it.
As for the IP reporting, we plan on having this.

Will the music player be able to have embed code so user (members) can use it on there myspace, facebook extc… Will people be able to modify the player like playlist dose where it lets members add a background picture on there player. That would be awesome if u guys could make that happen.
DEMO http://www.playlist.com/
I also think if we purchase the Beta version if we could get something like a cheaper price or a free mod or like 1 extra yr on upgrade something like that would make more people buy it I think.

Embed code: already in 1.6 and will be in v2
If you purchase a beta you know its not complete and its not stable, you know you will have problems because its not the stable release, so I hardly think such treat will happen… then again you never know..

good one
For those who dont know, Version 2 is a CMS, I cant see it happening an official phpfox module for integrating joomla into phpfox 2 (or the need of it)
[Reply]
A feature which is very important to me, is one that exists in facebook, when you post a comment on someone’s wall (or on your own wall) in addition to posting a comment, you can post a photo and comment on it. I find that many postings are not text they are photos and comments on photos so that feature is very important. (there has to be a button like in facebook called post photo) so that people can do this easily without typing any commands.
thx

Currently in 1.6 we have the ability to post images, but with V2 we will allow posting a picture from your gallery without BB commands, also videos and other media
[Reply]
Well this is a great news.
I was wondering since no nobody has commented yet. Will phfox v2 have the option to add news, articles with pictures. In my point of view if this software is used for a local community, news sections and classifieds is a must have.
If this two functions are also added, I will wait to purchase this software for my community sites.
Thank You:)

Purefan Reply:

An article and a blog are pretty much the same, specially since we will make it that blogs have more than one page and even from 1.6 you can post images with your blog so for sure this will be a feature. Same with classifieds, its already in 1.6 so we will have it for version 2 (only improved).
The news ticker is not a ‘for sure’ right now but its not difficult at all to do, so if time serves us right I believe it will be in the final release. Worst case scenario its a plugin released a month after the stable release.

If my sever currently is running php 4.3.11 and hosting 7 phpfox sites then I upgrade to php 5 as told to do so for v2 then will all other software still run smoothly?
[Reply]
Purefan Reply:

Php 5 has many advantages over 4.x, but it depends on how you upgrade, in general terms the engine update shouldnt be that much faster, but if you update and your configuration file is all messed up with lower limits or quicker timeouts then you may feel a difference. But in any case you should update even if you’re not getting phpfox 2, Php.net stopped supporting PHP 4 since 2007-12-31 and we’re already in 2009, but above all, php 4.3.11 was released 31-Mar-2005, can you imagine how many bugs have they fixed since??

phpFox2 will include an upgrade script, which will allow the upgrade from any past versions of phpFox including legacy versions (before 1.6.x). The upgrade script will be automated so clients will not have to do much other then upload the new script and then run the upgrade script. Will will include documentation for the entire process.

This is not the place to ask for neither support nor modifications assistance, for this you need to go to the forums because its a modification.
As per V2, blogs urls are more SEO, they look like this:
site.com/blog/blog-title/

No what I am trying to say is before when I upgraded I replaced all the files an did the mysite/upgrade. What I am trying to say is if I install a fresh new copy of phpfox v.2 on my server but don’t want to do a upgrade just want to start fresh well there be instructions on how to place you old data into the new phpfox v.2 fresh install data? Thank you for the fast respond you guys are great.

Sorry but I fail to see the point in your question, wouldnt “place your old data into the new phpfox v.2 fresh install data” be an upgrade??
I mean, you are using the new script but keeping your old information… if you didnt bring the old info then it would be a simple fresh install but to me this sounds just like a simple upgrade…
[Reply]
Okay lets see if I can get my question across sorry if am not explaining it well.
i was on phpfox 1.5 before an upgrade to 1.6.20 using the update feature but once upgrade the site had some bugs. I was wondering if instructions will be provided if I wanted to install v.2 on how to bring your old database from v.1.6.21 and added it to the new istalled v.2 Since I know the new v.2 is a completely different database structure. Pleas advise thanks!

…. We will provide a script, that installs V2 fresh in your site and then takes all your information from your 1.6.x database and places it in the new V2 site, you will not have to worry about database structures because this script will take care of that.

The new blog module is excellent. It has almost everything one can imagine. But, can I easily replicate this feature to have sections with same functionality for jokes, recipes, articles, reviews, etc…?
I remember I have suggested this kind of feature long ago before the version 2 development but I am not sure if the new version is like that or can work as content management systems do. i.e., you create new section and enable/disable different options according to your needs to have different sections on your site.
Similarly, I also suggested to have groups as mini phpfox sites like ning/facebook to allow users add any core feature (blog, gallery, event, videos, songs, etc…) to your groups.
Can you please update about it?
thanks!
