phpFox2 Beta 1 Released
It has been a great experience and development process for us these past few months with releasing our product in its Alpha stages. This is something we have never done, but glad we did as we picked up a lot of very useful information from the community.
phpFox2 has now reached Beta1. Our Beta versions are targeted towards developers, similar to our past Alpha releases. However, anyone is more then welcome to test these next Beta releases. There will be 4 beta releases leading to our RC (Release Candidate) versions. Our Beta versions are not supported and are not completed products. We will continue to take in community suggestions and develop new modules during our Beta process. Once we have reached our RC stage our product will be considered final. Our focus during our RC stage is to fix all the remaining bugs.
We will shortly cover what is new with Beta1, however if you would like to catch up with what our past Alphas introduced you can find more information here…
Whats new in phpFox2 Beta1
Music
Beta1 introduces our music module. There is a major change with how this module functions in comparison to how this module worked with past versions of phpFox. In the past we allowed anyone to upload songs and this can still be done, however there is a process each user needs to go through.
The module is now designed for Musicians and during the install the module will create a new user group “Musician”. Only musicians can upload songs to your server. Users that are not musicians can listen to songs/albums and add them to their play lists, which will be on their own profile. The reason for this major change is due to copyright laws when in relation to uploading/sharing songs that users do not have the rights to.
The player we will be using as our default media player will be the one provided by Flowplayer. We will provide a free plug-in as well for those that want to use the JW Player, which is what we have used in the past to power our music and video modules.
Music module currently supports…
- Uploading a song
- Creating an Album, which includes uploading several tracks, adding album art and inviting people to view the album.
- Albums/Songs can be viewed on a Musicians profile.
- Albums/Songs can be commented on.
- Albums/Songs are added to the news feed.
Music module will support…
- Ability to shorten MP3 length to X (where X is controlled by admins) seconds.
- Add purchase links to iTunes/Amazon.
- Play songs in an entire play list without the need to click on play for each song.
- Disallow users from selecting the same genre more then once.
- Support to rate an album/song.
- Support to report an album/song.
- Support to add songs to our own profile (Non musicians).
- Update album play count (currently set at 0).
- Ability to order tracks that are part of an album.
- Add the Musician user group to the registration form.
- Develop and include a new module “Fan”, which will allow users to become fans.
Custom User Groups
With the music module this introduced the ability to create custom user groups since this module requires a custom group to control how the profile of a Musician functions. The goal with custom user groups is to allow different profile layouts based on the specific user group. It currently has support for custom fields and in the case of the music module when editing your profile you don’t get the conventional fields to edit such as “About Me”, “Interests” etc.. you will instead get “Record Label”, “Genre” etc… This allows you to create a lot more user groups and each can have a set of custom profile fields.
When creating a user group you can directly inherit permissions/settings from another user group and from there modify the permissions/settings accordingly. It currently only works to inherit from the default user groups. Deleting a custom user group will ask you to move users that are part of that user group to another user group.
Quiz
Beta1 includes a new and improved quiz module and supports…
- Ability to control max/min questions.
- Ability to control max/min answers.
- Ability to control if a user can take their own quiz.
- Ability to control if quizzes should be moderated.
- Ability to control who can approve quizzes.
- Ability to control moderation on own quiz or quizzes created by others (edit/delete).
We no longer have a fixed number of questions/answers, when you go to create a new quiz the minimum number of questions will be shown, but you will still be able to add more as you want/are allowed.
From the Admin Panel you can also choose the format in which you want the scores to be shown, you can choose between the traditional percentage way (i.e. 75%) or the more user friendly “success over total” ( i.e. 3/4).
Change Logs
We have added a spec log here and a SVN change log here for Beta1.
Known Issues
Several known issues worth mentioning.
- Continued issues with Internet Explorer 6 & 7 (Menus, BBCode etc…)
- PHP safe_mode & open_basedir causing problems, however recent changed has fixed these issues but further testing will be needed.
- MySQL in strict mode causing install issues. If you encounter this please report it.
- Windows servers have not been tested thoroughly.
- Usage of the PHP mktime() function causing problems since there is no support for years prior to 1970, thus causing problems when users register.
To view more known issues check our bug tracker.

Good luck and Enjoy phpFox2 Beta1!

Any word on how we will be able to browse different custom usertypes? Will we be able to have cats and possibly subcats? I really want to be able to use vphpfox for a kind of directory for businesses as well as general users. It seems you might be close to having this functionality. if someone can sign up as a band and have a genre, than why not a business also haves business type and possibly further to a subcat. example.. business > restaurant > Italian. There are so many functional possibilities for this functionality as long as there is a good way to search and browse. I honestly feel this should be a top priority for v2. The “become a fan” option is great too and should be allowed across usertypes. Also should be a profile block “I’m a fan of..” Have any questions? Please ask.. these suggestions ail really launch phpfox to the forefront.

We are still looking into how to browse custom user groups. At the moment we are looking into modifying our browse section to include search filters for custom user groups. With Beta 2 we will be mainly focusing on the Video module, however we should have more time by the next release to look into this a little deeper. But I can say for sure we will definitely add custom search filters for each of the user groups.

Peter Armenti Reply:

Simply having search filters is DEFINITELY not adequate. There’s got to be a directory page of sorts that lists all usertypes. There has to be direct links to directory of each usertype. It would be a shame not to and some real attention to this aspect. There is no reason that all of us should be desperately seeking 3rd arty directory integrations, therefore duplicating content (and poorly) when the profiles themselves should be the directory. Pawnages 1.5 mod should be views as the holy Grail of how this should operate. He no longer really offers it and it should be core anyway. A simple page listing the different usertypes with aink to search within each would suffice. Allowing usertypes to sub list in subcats would improve further. I would think these would be simple developments at this point. To leave this out would really be missing the boat I think. Thanks for your work thus far.

Raymond Benc Reply:

Gotcha. Yes, a directory page can definitely be developed.
Regarding the sub-cats, were these sub user groups or search filters related to that user group?
Peter Armenti Reply:
May 11th, 2009 at 10:18 am
hmm.. I just realized I kinda just showed you 3 levels when it comes to businesses.. Optimally in the example Business > Restaurant > Italian - Business is a usergroup.. Restaurant could be a sub user group.. and Italian would be a filter.. although all three should appear in the directory in a parent/child structure. It wouldn’t be the end of the world if the second level couldn’t be a sub user group… but there should at least be 2 levels of children below Business (the usertype).
I realize this might be a little work but I think having this will really separate your script from the others.. So many phpfoxer’s try to use your script in this fashion, and to this point pretty ineffectively. I was going to try to integrate many directory scripts but there really is just no feasible way of doing so.. and it should be incorporated anyway.. it only makes sense. Doing this you can capture sales from scripts like edirectory, phpmydirectory, and more as well. Thank you so much for your attention to this matter.

Pete, you just confused me… I thought you were used the term directory in the sense of a members list page simliar to the forums? But now it seems like you are speaking about a Business Directory Module for listing businesses opposed to members?
You should check out the one TheDub is working on and the Mockups I submitted for next beta release. He also mentioned it will be the first mod he will upgrade for V2 as well at same time v2 final is released.
Peter Armenti Reply:
May 12th, 2009 at 8:52 am
TheDub’s is ok.. but why would you want a business to have a profile AND a business listing? It seems silly.. why not just have their profile be their listing.. it’s hard enough to get people to make 1 profile.. but then to get them to manage both a profile and a listing? Trying to duplicate content and such.. plus the profile is much more interactive and appropriate for a business to use to try and interact with the community.. it’s part of the gallery, forum, polls, posts, events, videos… on an on and on (every module you end up adding to your site).. plus now people can become a fan of that listing and their friends will see it on their profiles making it viral.. the profile can stay in touch with it’s friends about specials and events with mass mailings, bulletin posts and the like. The profile can participate in the forums and have it’s own threads and posts about all kinds of things that might help promote their business via their profile. It’s entirely silly for there to be a separate business directory on the site.. normal guests will hardly ever interact with it and businesses will find it cumbersome to use in the first place and will likely see little benefit in it. Plus with the regular profile they can more easily advertise your URL (their Profile) and to their benefit the profile will have regular new content driving both internal and external traffic via SEO and the likes.
All I’m really talking about here is having a way of easily searching these custom profile types via a directory page.. and the directory doesn’t stop at just businesses… it can be used for all kinds of artists or whatever custom usertypes your site chooses to have. Regular users will have to have a convenient way of searching these usertypes and a visual directory page is the best way to do so. It’d be even better if people can click on “businesses” and then get the page with all the cats and subcats of businesses.. hence what I was saying.. Businesses > Restaurant > Italian or Greek or whatever. Or Businesses > Lawyer > Divorce. See what I mean.. Likewise it can be used for anything you like. Entertainment > DJ > Wedding. The first designation is the custom user type and the second 2 are just filters of sort to help the person search. I see this being most useful for businesses but I know people will have all sorts of needs for it.
Does that help clarify things? Now that phpfox is going to have custom profile types built in it would be a shame not to go this one extra step further to take advantage of such great functionality. Thank you again Ray for taking this seriously as I think it will be a cornerstone of your script.
Peter Armenti Reply:
May 12th, 2009 at 8:56 am
by the way Ray.. I think it might be good if custom profile types can have the option of making multiple selections on the last filter.. so in the example of Business > Lawyer > Divorce… on the last one he can select Divorce, Accident, Real Estate.. or whatever.. I hope I’m making sense to you.. I think you are getting me. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks again.

You mean UserGroups with Secondary Permissions… From using V2 currently there is no usertypes built in the system. The only thing that comes close is the Music module which changes your UserGroup to Artist or Fan I think.
In the long run, lets say I am a Minister of a Church and I own a business for bible thumpers. Regardless, I would have to do three times the work if I want to keep my personal profile separate from my church profile and business profile.
I mentioned that other mod (directory beta) because I feel its an extension of the profile that I can list my alter ego with/without attaching to my profile. Now if Fox can add this into the product then more power to us. What I believe Fox needs to do is focus more on UserGroup Permissions and Permission Masks ala secondary permissions. A module is nothing if you don’t have good permissions and masks. More you have the more power and control you have for that section of your site.
There is a lot of lingo thrown around these days and honestly it makes it quite confusing and I think Fox should nip that in the bud quickly so we are all on the same page.
UserGroups = Validating, Member, Moderator, Staff, Admin, VIP ,Artist, Band, Couple, Owner, Promoter
Subscriptions = Standard, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum
I mean do we seriously need to break it down further with:
Membership Type
UserType
Profile Type
Bla bla ?
That’s why Fox’s problem got out of hand and control was due to the lack of permissions, masks, secondary permissions and flexibility in creating UserGroups. Well with the new method they have created, all that extra lingo is now obsolete imo. You create a custom UserGroup and give them all the special perks you want and then if you wish you can include this group as a choice on signup ie
Band
Artist
Fan
And Viola! All the confusion is gone. Want to add a subscription to one of the groups then that’s fine too. It’s really boils down to getting rid of the old thinking. Things got complicated with the old script because it was honestly a fossil. Can you believe there is not a setting or permission to disable IM, Quizzes, Live Chat, Bulletings and other small things in 1.6?
I understand exactly what you are looking for now. Directory wouldn’t have been my first choice of words, but It’s pretty much a enhanced browse member page that you can filter/sort by UserGroups, Join, Rating, Posts, Custom and etc. Yes I agree, the current method has so many options but is lacking the most simplest and basic ones that are very much needed as you have described.
Ok not understanding the music area….
You go to EXPLORE >MUSIC
I see some albums there I click on an album and it takes me to the bands profile page??
Then once there I have to KNOW to scroll down almost to the bottom of the page to see the MUSIC PLAYER on the right side below BASIC INFO…??
Or alternatively I can click on the ALBUM at the top of the user profile and get taken to a TRACKLIST…Where I STILL see no way to add a track to MY PROFILE…
Ok everyone thats just NOT intuitive at all….
When I go to a MUSIC SECTION I am wanting to see an INDEX of music site-wide…I want to see the top songs and EVERYWHERE I see a song I want to be able to click something to add it to my profile..
Not get taken to a profile so I can DIG around and find some songs.
MAYBE I am missing something…or maybe the music sections is MISSING something…
PLEASE remember (and I am bad about this) I build something and OF COURSE I know where it is but you HAVE to remember WHO you are ultimately building this for…and that’s OUR MEMBERS (you know the ones who STILL don’t know how to effectively re-size an image!)
designers end user CREED = K.I.S.S.

Raymond Benc Reply:

The index music section is built similar to Bebo or Myspace. It lists the artists not the albums. Once clicking on the artist you will end up on their musicians profile and from there browse their albums or tracks.
There is still a lot of work that will be done to the music section, currently the work done was to mainly focus on the process of adding songs/albums. Its still rather bare with limited features. Like you added there isn’t an option to add a song to our profile if we are not a musician, which is what we mentioned in the blog that we would be adding it.
There will also be other blocks added on the music section such as Top Songs, Featured Songs, Top Albums etc… in later versions of this module.

And What the heck happened… I went to upload a SONG and my Username was changed???

Raymond Benc Reply:

Once we become an artist the musicians account takes over the personal account, the script is currently designed to only allow one user group per user.

Many great features being added! But missing one that I believe to be crucial:
Approving Blogs Feature.
What would it do?
Every blog (if set to True in Admin Panel) would have to be approved before being posted.
Why?
If the site is a family friendly site, used to keep many family members connected from teen to grandmas, we definitely don’t want any clown putting up unapropriate material on their blogs which yes, they can be banned later but the pics/words would already have been seen by hundreds or even thousands…Which would be a turn off for the site’s reputation and trust. I don’t want my community looking like myspace which many parents have not signed up for nor want their kids to do it either. If it is to look just like myspace then we might as well just use myspace.
Some said, “What if you had too many blogs a day for you to go through?
Any community that is large enough should have by then enough people they can trust to give them permission (user group) to share the job, which would give them some sense of “ownership” which always works positively.
SO FOR THESE AND MANY OTHER REASONS I BELIEVE IT IS WORTHWHILE WALKING THE EXTRA MILE TO ADD THIS FEATURE.
[Reply]
Raymond Benc Reply:

Approving of blogs is planned to be added in a later version.
[Reply]
Good idea fobster I GUESS you need that feature. Otherwise you could just delete the offending blog right? I mean either way YOU (or a staff member) are going to have to DO something either approve it or delete it…
here’s where your suggestion breaks down in my eyes though…
Why not APPROVE…
-Comments (no offending comments wanted right?)
-Images
-Videos
-Bulletins
-Status updates..
You get my drift here?
The simple solution for the LONG run is to police your members (or have staff do it) If someone does something offensize and your terms of service says NOT TO, then delete them and block their IP….
Otherwise you WILL run yourself ragged….or perhaps a more UPDATED suggestion for your dilema would be to have a REPORT THIS button for EVERYTHING…seriously, that would be a good thing I mean look at craigslist…WORKS FOR THEM… Community stays un-offensive PLUS you have members that have nothing better to do than go flag things in essence THEY are working FOR YOU for FREE…
But that manual approval thing is just straight outta 1999…just saying ya know?

Raymond Benc Reply:

We plan on adding a approval system on all items, currently some modules already support this and some include support to approve comments on items. Once we have reached stable each module item should be part of the approval system that is if the Admin enables the feature.

Pictures, music, comments and such are fine to need approval. But requesting a approval on blogs because you run a family site is not going to help you one bit. As I said before and the other guy above, you are better off policing your members. If they don’t belong in your community then kick them out at first sign of bad behavior. Blogs are meant to be personal and not moderated prior to going live, but instead moderated after by good staff doing their jobs or cool members reporting offending items.
This world would be a slow evolution if Blogger, Yahoo, StumbleUpon, Facebook, Myspace, WordPress and etc required approval on blogs prior to going live.

Hi
I want to request a feature of bulk upload for all or many modules for admins, moderators etc.
Like music
===========
I am always faced problems uploading songs 1-by-1, ftp uploads or bulk uploads feature must be provided otherwise updating from 1.6 to 2, doesnt matter.
Like Images
============
Photos should be uploaded in bulk like ftp in backend and multiple uploades in frontend. User gorups will be taken into account for providing this facility.
Download Centre
===============
There should be a download centre provided like download directory. There are so many files, which we admins want to make available for users to download. So a download section must be provided.
.htaccess
=========
In phpfox there 80% .htaccess editing required for any particular change in site. This should be eliminated like to add folders, to direct/redirect some urls/pages etc.
We do not want to pay for basic things/features to developers or companies. For example bulk image uploads. As not every owner of phpfox is not from euorpe, US, or UK, there are countries where the currency is far less than these rich countries. I am from India, here the rate is 1USD=50 INR (Indian Rupees), 1GBP=80INR, 1Euro=65INR,
So owners like us, cant spend even USD10 for any mode etc, We hardly manage to buy phpfox. Please consider these facts…. basic features should be free… what you think.

Any way you can have an embedded video code upload for the video section? That would open the video section to a huge amount of content.
How about audio/video chat? phpfox is behind the ball on those features.

That’s important… an embeded option for video. I would like also to see this option in the music mod.
[Reply]
embeded code is important for everything, i hope the admin has the option to enable embeded code for any or all modules, pictures, videos, music, everything, this will help people publish there own stuff on other site and help us bring traffic to our site….
[Reply]
Also i think it whould be a good idea to have the users turn off customer profiles while visiting someone elses profile, for does hard to seee profiles… Basicly a button to swith users profile to original (not design) profile just to view the profile while you visit the page, that way you can read and see text in all does hard to see profiles, also i hope there is a real time show (preview) while you design, change, personalize your profile, colors, backgrounds, and all that good stuff users love….
[Reply]
Not sure if this was mention before, but will there be a way for the admin to add or enable the Auto change, update of the Country, State, City. for example when a user selects United States as there country, it will only show the States for that country, and the same for the City… This way we have real data input not fake made up stuff…. and create a link filter for the Country, State, and City for any user that shares where they are from. Similar to the Country filter we already have in 2.0, just wiish we can also have it for the state and city…
[Reply]
Also any updates on the Friends, Site feeds, will i t be like TeamsV activity feed? There feed is really amazing hope you guz make it similar or better…

Anyways, just a couple of ideas, thx for the hard work and dedication to the ccommunity, i love what you guys are doing and keeping up with the updates… Love it… Thanks Alot….

I am a previous phpFox user, and would like to get back into a new site idea of mine. I would like to get my site going now; therefore, I would purchase the current phpFox version and will need to include the User Type Module from AITOC.
Now, later on when this 2.0 is fully ready to go. Can I upgrade to the 2.0 without messing up the usertypes? I believe from what I read that user types will be available. So by upgrading would this allow me to roll right into 2.0? Or will I have problems that I run into?
2.0 is looking great so far guys. THanks for your time

Hello Carl,
Glad to hear your interest in going back to phpFox.
With the User Type module, a few of the features in this module is already included in version 2 and there is a big chance that the User Type Module will be obsolete with the new version. Since AITOC is our partner, they will most likely create some sort of an import script from their module into the new version, so that the data will be imported to the new version. However, AITOC or any other developer can not create an import or upgrade script until our developers are done with version 2.
We are releasing RC versions to third party developers a little bit earlier than to the rest of the crowd for the purpose of having them update their plugin to version 2 smoothly. Once version 2 is out and stable our developers will be working closely with third party devs in case they need help with upgrading their mods to version 2.
So to conclude: if I were you I would not be worried about upgrading from 1.6.x to 2.x, specially having AITOC’s module.
Hope I gave you some insight
Have a great day!

I’m not sure the profile section is as easy as it could be.
In order to move blocks around, I have to go to the “Customize Profile” menu.
Wouldn’t it be easier if you could do it from “My Profile”.
If you want to apply a custom profile theme this should also be available from within “My Profile”.
It would also make more sense if you could apply privacy settings to each block. You could then have a preview option to see what your profile would look like to the public.
I don’t see the need of the “Customize profile” option.

I agree 100% - This day and age, everything should be able to be done on the fly. Such as a inline editing vs being routed to another section. Dragable blocks should be done on the fly too just like any other cms system. I was very shocked to see how it was implemented in this script… Very much to ask what’s the point if I have to leave the page to do it?

Music/Audio Module: I understand the new features of the music module but my question is:
As I will be wanting an information and educational type audio module ie the spoken word, how does this fit in with your music mod? I understand the copyright situation etc., can you adapt this so users who can be educators/coaches/teachers etc can upload audio lessons, interviews etc so that these lessons or interviews can be free or pay?
As you can see, other people apart from musicians will want to upload audio for whatever reason whether allowed or not, free or pay.
Is it still the same as 1.6.21 that I can change the words “music”, “musicians” etc. using the Phrase Manager to the appropriate words for my type of community?
Thanks

Before you keep building more and more features you need to make phpfox more stable with thousands of users, why would some one wants a site with only hundreds of users or less than 10,000 users, you need to make your software stable for more than 100,000 to millions of users.
Also another problem with phpfox is security, we have found that there are a lot of security holes that cause hackers to install rootkits on the servers, one of the ways hackers upload files to the servers are via TMP folder, you need to make more secure when users try to upload images, or any other thing to the webserver.
