Accepting Feature Requests

phpFox2 is near its 3rd beta release. Beta 4 will mark the final beta for phpFox2 and our next release after that will be RC 1 (Release Candidate), which will officially freeze the product up until our final stable release.

Yesterday we worked on updating our bug/feature tracker and organized the versions and added future versions up until v2.1.0, which will be our next minor version release after v2 stable is out. Note this does not include maintenance releases (eg. 2.0.1, 2.0.2 etc…) as such release are designed to fix any unforeseen flaws. Minor version releases (eg. 2.1.0, 2.2.0 etc…) will include new features and may include Beta/RC versions before its initial release. Maintenance releases will not include Beta/RC versions.

Our request system is based on the votes provided by the community. We require at least 11 positive votes to consider a request to be added. If a request gets more then 11 votes we will do our best to add the feature in v2 or upcoming minor version releases. We will not reject requests unless the idea is not in the best interest of the company or community or simply cannot be done due to either financial or coding resources. However, our goal is to accept any feature that gets a positive response from the community as this is a feature the community wants.

All requests will be marked as “Suggested” and will not change in order for users to continue voting on the feature. If a request does not reach the 11 positive vote requirement there maybe times a request brings up some really good points and can be accepted by us, however the community feedback on each request is what we base a lot of our judgement.

The 11 vote limit is subject to change.

After Beta 3 has been released no more features will be accepted for the final release of v2 and any requests accepted will be marked for v2.1.0.

We will Twitter each feature we accept so follow us if you want to say up-to-date with what will be added in future versions.

  1. Sounds okay, although I think that there are many good suggestions with less than 11 votes. I think someone should read all suggestions and check everything for sense and usability, not only on the amount of votes.

Makes sense I think, quickly realised, but only got 4 votes. Not everyone of the forums is also a “feature reqest” reader and voter, that’s why not always a low amount of votes means it was a bad idea.

If you are not sure if you should implement an idea with less than 11 votes, then you should put a forum vote about this feature, so everyone will take notice and can vote within a short time period or discuss the feature a bit more.

This way would be more efficient and handy I think.

I think it’s okay to not add that more features for now to take the time to improve all existing stuff (which is already a lot great work) more.

I personally hope that this suggestion will be completly solved and fixed until the v2.0 final, it’s the most important thing these days, or phpfox 2.0 will look and be correct only in the english language, else all other languages wouldn’t be correctly working after their grammar rules, but you know this already.

Okay, I think it’s time to say a bit “thank you” for all the great work so far until this v2.0 beta2, exept the design (which is less important), it’s already a very great script. The code is clean and all modules are implemented smartly. Now adjusting everything a bit more and improving the flow will trigger the social power of this script and your success will be granted I’m sure.

    Regards…

I can understand your feelings nx but try to understand it is very difficult for us to read all the suggestions… there are over one thousand and we need to make time to work them out if we approve them, sometimes people post 5 requests in the same report and that only makes it more difficult for us to approve or reject because we may see one of them fitting into the general trend but not the others…

For what is worth, the language system is going to be top notch, we do realize how important this is and believe me we’re really concerned about this too :)

    Thanks for your feedback!!

  2. THUMBNAIL CROPPER

MUST MUST MUST have a cropping tool for making the square version of a persons profile image. Every other script including free Elgg has this. Just “making” the profile image square where needed is not adequate. Many users use very disproportionate images and they just look ridiculous when the are forced square.

So many good requests are going to be overlooked because it’s inconvenient for people to search and vote. I’m very involved and I still find it annoying. Everyone vote please so you sites don’t look like garbabe lacking this feature.

    Thanks :P

The above it for an avatar (profile picture) cropping tool.. instead of just squashing the image into a square. Feature available on all other similar scripts.

Thanks for the update. We’ve approved this feature and it will be implemented in v2.1.

  3. Good article, the advertisment is sold?

  4. one feature that would be good also is being able to either reject or approve a new member. In case it gets used for a company with branches all over the world. They dont want anyone just coming in and having access to private information nor have info about its employees.

Also, ability to approve or disapprove blogs. (that’s been approved right? I hope)

What I really like about phpfox is like Purefan mentioned it is not just a social network anymore.

I think that phpfox, because of its flexibility and control through admin panel it can be not only a social network but be turned into whatever you want extending its usability and possibilities where your limit is your imagination. (I tried ning 3 times and canceled every single time with frustration and realized phpfox was a better one because of this ability of turning it into whatever I want) read more >> http://blog.phpfox.com/2009/04/22/phpfox2-alpha-4-released/#comment-1638

  6. What is going to happen with the RSS links in the new version?

    What do you mean?

    Purefan,

I am sorry for not being more specific. Currently when you click on the RSS feed link, http://www.phpfox.com/version/2.0.0beta4/rss/, at the bottom of the demo version it sends you to a page with the following comment:

The page you are looking for cannot be found or has not been developed yet.

What are the future plans for this? Could it be converted to a twitter type feed? In other words can there be RSS feeds for different areas of the site. I.E. One for comments, one for photo comments or any area of the site where users post tid bits. Also, what do you think about logging status updates where users can track there friends in a RSS feed.

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Purefan Reply:

Well, RSS Feeds are a special kind of feed, not exactly like twitter feeds. Rss feeds can be turned into a twitter like client but they are not by default anything like that. Check more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS

If you mean a regular feed for photo comments or etc, there are the Updated feeds already in the dashboard, are you asking if these can be turned into an RSS Feed?

  7. Ability to post links to other sites like news articles etc.

    Purefan Reply:

If its in a well intentioned manner the spam protection should not affect the post.

    Mark Foster Reply:

This is true… I had an Idea where a user can maintain a page/feed where they can post links about different types of topics. IE: A user can create a page/feed called News Articles or Movie Critics or Any Other Topic with out nowing HTML. On this page they can post a link to a news site like CNN or Reuters or Movie Trailers along with a summary and title related to the submitted link. Of Course the users could name the page/feed any title they want. It would provide content for the site and allow the users to maintain there own little news site movie critic site or whatever thier heart desires.

    What do you think?

    [Reply]

    Purefan Reply:

Do you mean for the site users? The site administrator can create pages like that in 1.6 already :)
