phpFox2 Beta 4 Released
phpFox2 Beta 4 has arrived.
Beta 4 was initially scheduled to be the final Beta version for phpFox2, however due to recent unforeseen findings another Beta will have to be added to the line up. Beta 5 (ETA: July 15, 2009) will be the next release and is now scheduled to be the final Beta version for phpFox2 before moving onto RC. The new ETA for stable is November 4, 2009.
Hiting and finding an ETA for phpFox2 has been very difficult due to the product being redeveloped from the ground up and having never encountering any of the problems that arise, so allocating this extra time is crucial to the future stability of the product especially when in relation to the upgrade routine as it is still very risky to upgrade sites from v1.6 until more tests are done.
This extra time will allow use to fix issues with the core engine that need to be fixed before the script is used on live sites as well as complete the Admin Control Panel and Upgrader, which were both scheduled to be worked on during RC versions. RC1 will include the final version of the frontend product, AdminCP and Install/Upgrade script.
The time we added for Beta 5 we also included time to develop some new features requested by the community. We will continue to accept new features and complete them for RC1 instead of waiting until v2.1. The selection of these new features will be based on the communities feedback and the votes of each feature request. phpFox2 was concepted over a year ago and Social Networking has changed a lot since then so it is vital certain features have to be implemented before v2 is locked.
For anyone that will have their “Support & Upgrade Renewal” run out before stable release of phpFox2 will not have to worry about upgrading to phpFox2 and having to extend their “Support & Upgrade Renewal” package. Due to the recent delay every valid license holder can download phpFox2 free of charge on its final stable release date and any updates from that day and 30 days after.

Whats new in phpFox2 Beta4
Photo Tagging
Beta4 introduces support to tag photos with text or with your friends names. You can control how many tags a photo can have as well as if a user can tag just their own photo and/or other photos. You may also control how many times they can tag their own photo and/or photos uploaded by other users.

Our default “No Image Available” photo has been used ever since phpFox was first created and we felt v2 would be a perfect time to change this image. Our new image that will be displayed when a users profile photo is not available will be:

Username Suggestion
The registration process now comes with a username suggestion feature, which on failure of a valid username or if the username is already in use it will attempt to return X amounts of available names (X is controlled by a global setting via the AdminCP).

Editing a User via AdminCP
All past versions of phpFox have never provided a method to edit a users account direct from the AdminCP. Due to how the script was designed, editing an account would require an Admin to login as the user via the AdminCP and then alter any information that belongs to that user. With phpFox2 we designed the engine so a user group, which in this case by default is the Admin and Staff user group, has the ability to edit a users account direct from the AdminCP. In order to find the users we worked on a browse section within the AdminCP, which includes a small filter to help find users we want to edit. More filters will be added to this page as well as links on a users profile that will link to the page where Admins can edit a users account.
Edit Username
Beta4 introduces the ability to edit our own username, which by default is disabled. The username is used to create a unique ID for the user, which will give them an easier time to share and access their profile. You can control which user group can change their username and how many times they can change their username before the feature is locked.
Note: We have enabled this feature on our live demo for public testing.
Under Age Profiles
Admins can not control if users account should be private based on their age group. The setting we created for this is “Force Profile Privacy” and the value defined for this setting will control which profiles will be forced to be private. On our live demo we set this value to “14″ and the design is to automatically set profiles that are in the 14 and under age group to private, where we provide a link to add the user as a friend. If the user accepts the friendship then the profile will be opened for you to view. We also provide a setting to control which user groups can view profiles regardless of their privacy settings and in this case all Admins by default can view any profile.
Blocking Users
The ability to block users isn’t a new feature, however we have added some improvements to the logic of mutual blocking of users and an override feature to view a profile even if you have been blocked. Mutual blocking in v1.6 has some problems and it starts when User A blocks User B, then User B cannot view User A’s profile thus not allowing them to block User A. With v2 if you have been blocked by another user you will be able to block them as well as unblock them by either viewing their profile and clicking “Unblock” or by visiting the privacy section where it lists all the users you have blocked.
By default Admins cannot be blocked and can view any profile regardless if they have been blocked. This sort of power can be granted to any other user group, however its only enabled by default for Admins.
Custom State/Provinces
v1.1 introduced U.S. states and ZIP code support. v1.6 allowed Admins to edit the U.S. states list to either change or include their own states/provinces. With v2 we worked on allowing countries to have their own set of states or provinces. For testing purposes with Beta 4 we provided a list of U.S. states and Swedish provinces, which will only be displayed when selecting the respective countries. With this change in the engine it will allow us and Admins the ability to add custom states/provinces in the future. They will be able to manage it directly from the AdminCP, however this area was put on hold until RC1.

Announcement Module
We initially wanted to create a block similar to v1.6 that would display an announcement on the sites dashboard for all the members to see, however we felt we can do so much more with this feature in the future so we decided to create a module and add some more features to it for us to test with Beta 4.
Announcements with Beta 4 can be added and managed directly from the AdminCP and members can view these announcements on their dashboard or via the announcements section. Each announcement can have a subject, intro and content. The “intro” of the announcement is optionally used for the dashboard and if your announcement holds too much data it will link to the full announcement where the “content” data is used to display it. When adding an announcement we pick up all the available language packages thus allowing Admins to create an announcement for each language package.
Future support will include:
- Start/End time stamp.
- Control if announcement should be displayed within the dashboard.
- Control if an announcement is active.
- User filtering based on User group, age group, location or gender.
Subscription Module & API Gateways
Beta 4 introduces the Subscription module and introduces a new method on how to handle memberships for pay. Unlike past versions of phpFox, which would allow you to create a subscription package based on the custom user group it now works where Admins can create as many custom subscription packages and connect them to any default or custom user group.
For each package you can provide:
- Title
- Description
- Image (Optional)
- The user group to “upgrade” the user after payment
- The user group to “downgrade” the user once payment has failed or has been canceled.
- Ability to add to registration form
- Ability to control if users must purchase a package during registration. User cannot access the sites features until payment is made.
- Initial Cost (Based on default currencies provided, Admins will soon have control to add more currencies)
- Recurring Cost, which is optional and Admins can control the recurring price and period (eg. Monthly, Quarterly, Biannually or Annually).)
The payment API gateways we have included with Beta 4 is PayPal and 2checkout. Gateways can be enable/disabled from the AdminCP and Admins can control if the gateways are in “test mode” or not. Each gateway has custom settings and can also be controlled direct from the AdminCP. The subscription packages are currently positioned within the users dashboard and can be found by clicking on the link “Upgrades”. A block will be provided to advertise packages on random within the dashboard.

Recent Logins Block
A recent logins block has been developed and is part of Beta 4. Past versions of phpFox have this block, however since the introduction of the ability to drag/drop blocks each block can have a set of custom settings to control how to display information. In this case users can control if they want to view recent logins from everyone or just their friends.
Site Online/Offline Support
Admins can now turn their sites Online/Offline direct from the AdminCP and leave an offline message for users to see. Admins can also control if a “blank” page should be displayed with the offline message instead of the entire site with all the links. By default Admins and Staff can login and browse the site even when its offline. Any user group can attain these rights based on how you setup other user groups.
Fullscreen Text Editor
When writing a blog or a message to a friend you may end up writing a lot of data and the form to input this data can get a little cramped. Instead of resizing the form we went with the method to fit the entire screen with a textarea form. To best explain this feature here is a short video:
Site Stats Block
Beta 4 introduces a Site Stats block that gives Admins and developers control over what statistics should be displayed direct from the AdminCP. Developers can include “stats” for their products and have Admins install them direct from the AdminCP. Currently we provide 4 stat blocks for testing purposes and they are Members, Polls, Blogs and Photos. The site stats block found in the users dashboard will list how many items each of the provided stat blocks have. These stat blocks can be managed from the AdminCP which include the ability to change the phrase, link, icon, activity, php code and the ordering.
Admins have control over if stats should be displayed at all and if stats should be cached and for how long. By default stats are cached and are keep static for 60 minutes and thereafter re-cached. The reason the stats are not live by default is due to several extra queries to the database which can cause a strain on the server if too many stat blocks are installed.

Birthdays Block
Beta 4 introduces the Birthday Block to the users dashboard. It displays 5 friends with upcoming birthdays within a span of X days (X is controlled by an AdminCP setting and by default is 7). It also allows members the ability to send the users with birthdays a “Birthday E-card”, which currently only supports an optional text message. Once the recipient logs into the site they will receive an instant notification about the birthday e-card with a full link to view the message. More tasty features will be added to fully transform this feature into full blown e-card.

I tell surely final statble product will be released in next year only. Because this is not a ordinary software development, this one is a great work.
Covered in Phpfox2 beta 4 are all very nice topics. I bet surely Phpfox2 going to be amazing one.
But I am worrying, how much it is going to cost for single license? I think, they will charge more than 1000 bucks per license and more than 1000 bucks per brand removal….

I think should keep it the same price. Reasonable for all people and free upgrade for current users.
I suggest phpfox add a date matching services with rating. This what keep people coming back. people like to meet new friends and date too. Add a dating search or subscription for these optional service.
I hope to hear from you soon. This I been waiting for along time. I even thinking of just adding a plugin for dating that connect to the same database becuase phpfox is sleeping on this topic.

I think this setting is best practiced for editing Display name and not for editing Username. Reason is the username changes does not effect any posting however it does affect the url. Now if users all start changing username randomly you will end up with a lot of 404’s and user not found. This is a SEO nightmare for webmasters.
Applying this setting to edit display name will not give us 404’s or user not found. Nor will it affect spider searching. This method I propose is exactly how Facebook and others operate.
A user should only be able to choose a username one time only either at signup or later in their settings. Again one time only. Just like flickr and the rest if you disable your account the username is not placed back in the pool, it remains so that you can reactivate your account and all info is intact.
So please don’t even leave this as a option. Instead apply the same theory and principle to the display name like other platforms do. They allow you to change your name up to X amount of times or require admin approval of name change.

Same theory will be applied to display names. This feature was created for sites that disable usernames and use user ID’s instead and at a later time enable the feature to use usernames we can then offer the ability to update their username. By default this feature is disabled and like you mentioned is very bad for SEO if used for simply allowing anyone to change their username.

Yes, but even still going from id to username url the max “hidden” setting should be “1″ when it’s enabled and when the person creates a username url then that’s it. No more changes unless they create a new account would be the only way to obtain a new url or admin overide. The idea of it being settable for urls is just a ticket/support hog later down the line and I rather see support for real issues and not for people who didn’t realize the consequences of allowing multiple username url changes. That’s just my feelings about it as I see no real positive benefit for urls to have a setting like that imo.

Let’s imagine it was /ophra/ and she decided to join my site and claim her url because of trademark infringement… Yes we know how common it is from Twitter lately when all the superstars came in and found their names were taken so twitter took them back and gave to the superstars. But they did that manually. Anyway, using such a popular name meant a lot of pages that were indexed and now not found just because of one small change.

Beta 5 will have a new template, however similar to the sample theme we provided in earlier beta versions this will be more for testing purposes and to see how the engine behaves with more then one template. Plus it will allow designers to start creating/editing templates and return back with feedback before RC is released.

Will there be a import/export for designs? If you noticed in IPB you can export a complete custom skin with all images and etc into a tar.gz file and re-import to another installation or same one to alter and change it’s design and so on and so on.

Is it just me or is Beta4 much slower. The biggest slowness I found is when I played a video and without stoping it, I clicked on Dashboard. The video kept playing for a while and it took a while to get to Dashboard.

Is it slow on the entire site or just when trying to visit the main dashboard? Currently the dashboard is displaying a lot of information so this could be why it feels a lot slower then past beta versions. We are working on some more caching methods for the dashboard to help in this area.

I ran them beta 3 & 4 and then 2 & 4 and they loaded just the same even dashboard vs member index in old versions. You guys computer must just be slow. I ran these tests in FF and IE with only a single tab open only and no other software running. Keep in mind this was ran from my local first then I tested there live installs with same near results live vs live and local vs local.
Test Announcement window, if these are supposed to announcements from admin to users, should we not allow users to close that?
Once the user closes that, it is gone, can’t get it back.

Also more options than just add to a friends, more like: Send Message, Friends Request, Something… is way to simple maybe search for friends, random users or something else than just profile private… MAYBBE Something like “Here is Some users you might find interesting” or something like that, don’t end the users there keep them going around the site by adding more user interactions modules, even links..

This is our goal with the “state/province” feature. Its design is to allow child options so a state could have a list of counties or cities and cities could then have a list of local communes and so on. However, the first step was states

is it possible to have the different features assigned to membership instead of memberships assigned to features. For example, The basic membership is FREE but the music module would cost an X amount to get full access, X amount for video section. It is a model usually used by freelancing/portfolio sites where you have read only access to all modules and partial/full access to only those modules you have paid for.
So there could still be membergroups created with full access to all modules but just was looking for the ability if we do it other way around as well. Would this be a lot of work to do?

In version 1.6 it was possible by creating more usergroups, in version 2 its called subscriptions. The raw functionality is already in beta 4 but the whole system I believe its not completed yet, in any case it will be possible when the stable version is released.

this would actually be possible by allowing feature access based on “user” instead of “usergroup”. Like some where in admin panel an option where a certain module could be added to user “chodhry” or view a list of users who have paid for various modules and allow them access to those modules.

Phpfox v2 needs some major work on the essentials.
Where are all the notifications? Comment Alerts? Anything?
Each individual status should have it’s own page like facebooks too, so if the conversation extends pasts 4~ comments, when you want to view all comments, the link should take you to a url like phpfox.com/user/status/id_1 .. as a permalink for the status.
You should be notified on all commentable areas you make like blogs, profile, quizzes, polls, etc.
Subscribe to forums, n if you create a forum it should notifiy you of replies, etc.

about PHOTO TAGGING.. will we be able to tag a photo with a specific member? and then that member be notified that they’ve been tagged in a photo? They should also have as part of their gallery, photos that they’ve been tagged in… like facebook. The only photos I have on facebook are those that other people have tagged me in.. so it really ads content to peoples profiles and makes the site look alive as well.

I want to know if phpfox 2 will amend any of the 3rd party default modules like the music player or video player. I would love for users to be able to see how many times people have played each of their uploaded songs like on myspace. Also, although this may already be possible, I would like to be able to incorporate 3rd party software into my phpfox site like fantasticos v4Bulletin board and other thing of that nature.

Awesome work guys! It is really cool to see phpfox taking its own shape and form and not be seen as a clone of something else! Keep up the good work!
I am starting to work putting websites together for certain organizations/clubs, article websites and am considering using phpfox for that kind of work as it has great capabilities and is a powerful platform for it. That’s why I am glad the developers of it are thinking “outside of the box” allowing it to be used not strictly as “alternative/niche” social network thus giving us all the ability to use our imagination as to how to use this script.
Therefore, my questions are:
Will there be any type of license for developers at discount price? That is, those using phpfox dozens of times to develop a specific type of website for their clients?

1. Right now we can only choose a person to be “Tom”, that is, to be the new member’s friend. It would be nice to be able to choose ONE PERSON, ALL(network), MEMBERSHIPE TYPE.
2. Allow Admin to choose to allow new member sign up by invitation from MEMBERSHIP GROUP or ALL only. If such is enabled, then sign up box would disappear.
3. Add/allow to add UPDATES in the Dashboard of my profile page’s boxes (about me, music, movie, interst - which could be changed to other things such as “I’ve been thinking lately…”, “I’ve been doing…”) to increase interactivity and great conversations. So not only Comment would be the great attraction of one’s profile in the UPDATES section but SOMETHING DEEPER AND MORE INTERESTING than just “Nice pic!”, “I love it!”, “They look so cute!”……(Even comments section would look more interesting with meaningful talks)
4. Allow Admin to build his community’s own look according to whatever thing he wants to emphasize due to the characteristics of his network. Explaining: He would be able to choose what he wants shown in the front page (like ning), So if his website is big on articles (renaming Blog) then he could choose to show articles (newest, most read, most voted, etc) on the index page and so on: Announcements, Bulletins and Events may be very big for certain kinds of niches and thus important to have it shown on the index page instead of videos for example. Others may have videos as the main thing in his network so then he would be able to show the tabbed LATEST VIDEOS, FEATURED VIDEOS, MOST VIEWED VIDEOS and so forth. Others may find it extremely important to have AUDIO on the front page as it is the main attraction of his network for new bands for example, then he would be able to build his frontpage accordingly….
IDEA for simple use of this feature: Admin in admin panel click check box for the things he wants shown on index page. Right next to each thing he chose there would be a radio button he can check to choose how he wants it to appear: tabbed. individual. / most recent. featured. most read(watched/listened), etc. Then a dropdown: left, right…
I think this would definitily change the patternized look of each individual’s phpfox website.

Oh, I would also add html boxes that could be placed where Admin wished too. Then through Content Manager in Admin Panel I would be able to insert graphics, pictures, videos, extra banners, pic sliders or whatever we wished with hotlinks and everything or even dynamic drive’s cool stuff. Like in blogspot. This way I wouldn’t have to mess with public.index html coding anymore to create that personal look. So I would say, ability for Admin to create as many html boxes as he wants.
All this would definitely make phpfox rock!

Thanks for the hard. These are some of the issues i came across. Provision in the admin section to add state to a particular country. I cannot find it in the beta 4. Please i would want this to be implemented in the next beta.
I want a little tweek in the quiz section. I want a situation where the quiz answers contain images. To understand what i mean see AITOC Quiz mod for v1.6
Another issue i can across is usertype and membership. It is still not clear to me if this feature is the same as usergroup. If it is does it function or will like have the same functionality like AITOC usertype mod for v1.6. I would want to indicate a logo and membership type beside each profile.
Username suggestion should contain the users first name and last name like facebook. During my test i found out that stomething like this is not currently supported by v2 ( me.you).

Theres a couple of things that I think should be a major add a STIEMAP generator for the whole site and a separate one for the video section, was we know the better sitemap the better indexing.
OTHER FEATURES:
Get a trophy or emblem for tasks:
If members write 25 blogs they get a emblem or trophy.
If members upload 25 pictures they get a emblem or trophy.
If members upload 10 song they get a emblem or trophy.
If members get 2000 points they get a emblem or trophy.
If members comment 100 times they get a emblem or trophy.
If members referrers 25 people they get a emblem or trophy.
Am sure by now you get the picture. On the left side of the page am putting as an example there’s something that says “my emblems” if you click where it says see all it will give you the emblems description as well. Diffidently a most have.

Video Section Features:
Allow admin to add site where to get video form I seen a lot of members asking how to add metacafe and so many other video palces. video on there site to share make it so you can do it for the admin panel.
Allow Admin to place a RSS feed of a site where they can get video upload automatically to there site just by placing Keywords and then admin would approve videos for the admin panel approved videos will get post with name, tag, and description.
Allow Video placed form other site to play with your sites player. Not Youtube’s player.
Allow categories to have there own page format. (you’ll see what I mean in the example)
Better SEO for the videos.
Allow admin to create a sitemap of there videos to upload to google/yahoo/msn.

Will we have a message for the users to change there fake state or city tat they entered, i notice some users in my site and maybe in all other sites they have, fake, dumb things as there city or state. Just something to let the user know to update there personal information, “Please correct your City and State for your friends ti be able to find you” or for whatever X reason when we; upgrade to 2.0, since 2.0 will have cities and states provided by the script, and not by the users registration. i rather have my users correct data to help my sites activity and SEO… THank you fox.

Will we have different type of messages (alerts) according to the type of message or comment, like video comments, blogs, forums….. So on that way a useer knows what the comment is about and where it was posted in.. Also, When we featured a user can we have a message or better a comment be sent to them telling them “They have been featured” also a message if any of there fotos, videos have been featured, a comment would be better that way we can encourage other user wanting to be part of the featured list?

You are adding such amazing features… I appreciate them all. But, please, can increase the VIDEO QUALITY of the new releases?
Videos and pictures are often the first thing that catch newbies eyes, and get us new signups.
I sort of feel that all of your efforts will be vain unless you fix the video quality of phpfox 2.

Why on earth would you take up the right site with huge boxes that are linked to content? They should all be on top bar via drop down. The photo battle page is awful. The side by side cropped feature of 1.6 photo battle is much better. The right column should be 120px max and use left column for content. I am no fan of the layout of 2.0 at all.

You can always change the default template for something more suitable, we try to do the best job we can on providing a default look but in the end you dont want to use the default style/template because there are many other sites using it already and you want your site to be unique right?
For now we will focus on the features to be implemented and heard that we’re getting a professional designer anyways so maybe thats what you’re waiting for, or maybe I heard wrong…

The photo battle needs to be improved over the 1.6 version. Right now all you guys did was just port it over without adding any useful features to it. I think you guys should do it like Google image Labler does.

Allows you to add tags to images which is a feature right now in V2 I believe, but this allows it to be a competitive thing where you can receive points for contributing tags to images that are missing tags or improving the tag search by adding more or common.
I’m not worried about the design of two images on a single page lol and agree with you guys on that cause that is really a simple change.

Yeah i dont mind scrolling down as much but it whould be nie to get more added, but yeah this scrolling is a simple fix just shrink the images and adding them next to each other, but i rather have more options and more info for user to be more interactive, but my main concer is having a great profile designer, is what people want to have than searching for all does sites with virus and what not, a designer that can save and add the design to a list for other users to use, so every user that design his or hers profile, adds the layout to a db where the users can select from users layputs made from users already register…

A simple change? You are not worried about layout concepts that are actually a step down from 1.6 ? The gallery layout needs to be redone and that is obvious. The rt column is too wide. The feature buttons should be dropdown at top of page so as not to waste space. This is just common sense programming. If the layout will be improved for final release then great. I use styles. Requiring a whole new theme is ridiculous if that happens. It’s easier to create a custom style then a custom theme. Out of the box the style should be much better then 1.6 and not the reverse like it is now. Layout should be easy for phpfox to improve on so hopefully they will realize that they should get the basic layout done right and then people can get custom styles.

i have been reading all the news and comments on this blog and phpfox site. I have just bought the phpfox script. I have been wanting to buy this script for the past 2 years. Finally, i have bought it. I need to know more about this coz im still learning how to use this script. Currently, I am testing myself with phpfox 1.6.21 i guess.. if im not wrong lol. Well, first tell me what are RC1 and RC2?? why are they different?? If im using RC1 then can i modify it to phpfox V2?
When phpfox v2 is launched will i get the script?? i guess i will but im still confirming it lol… The template of the demo for beta 4 version is the default template of V2??? If yes then it would be gr8 gr8!
