phpFox2 RC2 Released

We are pleased to announce that phpFox2 RC2 (Release Candidate 2) has been released for public testing.

RC2 introduces mainly fixes in preparation for the stable release and several modules have been added into the default language package, however you are still unable to translate this version as there are still many phrases that need to be added. One major change is how the users feed function. You will now be able to view your own feeds within the sites dashboard. You can also rate feeds up/down and you can enable a feature to integrate comments into news feeds. Note that if you have used the Comment module with past versions and you enable the integration to use comments in the users feeds it will not display the old comments added as these are 2 totally different modules. We have also added the ability to “View More” feeds.

If you would like to follow up with what version 2 offers check out our past releases:

  1. NOTE: Comment module is disabled as it is integrated with the feed module as requested by the community.

However, this feature is something you can disable/enable from AdminCP under Settings > Manage Settings > feed > Integrate Comments Into Feeds.

    Enjoy the new release!

  2. [EDITED by admin] Clearly a ploy to get search engine to pick up keywords.

No Peter, it’s not spam, I’m a happy 1.6 customer, but I also expected more of a new developed version. And now I’ve read these 2 articles in the “Internet World Business” and “Webmasters Professionals” magazine and v2.0 got a negative rating there behind other SN scripts. Now I’m confused if we should re-new our licences to install v2.0, I really have the fear now to confuse our members with the new system, because after my opinion and what I’ve seen so far in the live demo, there’s really no clear structure of the user’s account, I’m an old man and without a manual I don’t understand much about what I can do and where I can do something in v2.0 …
I’ve voted for all your suggestions Peter Armenti, they are all good, but you toke most of them from Facebook and Facebook is not a good website, only good for the Americans perhaps, but it’s low quality, MC Donalds Style.
And I’ve read very nice useful suggestions in the forum and in the project tools, since 1 year they are there, but all these suggestions were ignored, why? Only suggestions of ClubUgly, Anna, Peter Armenti and a few others has been always accepted and implemented, perhaps the developers like you more. Our phpfox communities members were waiting for the new 2.0 version, and now they wonder what’s really new in 2.0 and why they had to wait over 1 year of developement for this. I have real problems to tell them what’s better now, help me please, I’ve fear to loose my phpfox communities. And I still can not translate? I feel so crestfallen, sorry :-/

Well.. firstly to say that facebook is mcdonalds style is the understatement of the century.. it rates 2nd only to google Globally according to Alexa.com - so it must be doing something right as a social networking platform.. http://www.alexa.com/topsites - it is the viral social networking communication style of facebook that we were taking hints from, nothing more..

Secondly.. it may appear that little has changed to the untrained eye.. but your people being developers “should” be able to know the differences..

    1) The engine (something I know little about) has been largely rewritten and improved therefore increasing speed and scalability of our sites.. how can you complain about that? That is large enough reason in iteself..

    2) Improved core notifications system.. this is what keeps people coming back in interacting with eachother.. it’s the REASON that facebook is as big as it is..

    3) Improved commenting, IM/chat, and more..

    4) OpenSocial, facebook connect, and possibly more plugins that make it easier for people to join and interact AND will allow us to interact with foreign (open social) gadgets and such.

    5) The new Marketplace, improved forums… improved groups and the way groups interact with the rest of the site as a whole.. improved events..

on, and on, and on.. so many additional opportunities.. not to mention the new and improved plugin system while will make it easier to develop, implement, and take advantage of plugins developed both privately and by and for the community.

I might concede that perhaps the dashboard needs to be cleaned up a little bit to make it a bit easier.. but that’s simply done through templating to meet your needs..

In other words.. you have to look a little deeper to see the differences.. and when you do you’ll realize that it’s a no brainer… perhaps the people doing that review didn’t do their homework and only looked at the surface of the demo.

Lastly before I go.. you say that ClubUgly, Anna, Peter Armenti (myself) were the most regarded with terms of suggestions.. firstly I’m not sure that’s true because I only made a couple of feature suggestions.. but more importantly the suggestions made by us received the most votes from the community.. from both people that are actively involved and passively involved.. therefore they are no longer OUR suggestions.. they are the COMMUNITY’s suggestions.. we’re all in this together.. for better or for worse.. but today I tell you it’s for the better :)

Facebook think far for the future…. so as we .. Thats why just a basic funtion doesn’t do a good work for longer run…..

you like 1.6 because you are used to it.. thats all…..

  3. The Whats News should always be in the top not on the bottom.
second- There should be a way for members to post advertising with a tool to upload banner post a ad and pay using paypal.com
This would be great for administrator to earn some money.

Also, The phpfox2 need a section displaying people or members that “YOU MAY KNOW” Add as freinds this will keep more people interacting.
Also Add a college school module so people who went to the same school can be match and option to add as friends.

also, Why have two of the same AD size 250 by 250 on the one page? don’t make sense. You that space wisely may be top video, or top music artists,

The template should be more organized. A single match module would be great people like meeting single people dating would be a BIG idea to get more people to join

Also, A add friend network which will grab all the contacts friends from yahoo, aol, hotmail, other and send them a message request this will bring more people to join the social network

  4. Is it okay to upgrade a 1.6.20 production site yet? I will of course go to 1.6.21 first…

MY CONCERN is the PHOTOS AREA I have over 6,000 photos and some of them are pretty big will all this switchover fine or will it possibly TIMEOUT on this part like 1.1 did to me when I went to 1.5 on the upgrade???

And if this is done and works will it be simple to upgrade to the LATEST or next release?

    Thanks!

  6. I have to agree with “J” what’s up with two 250 x 250 on a single page??? Come on!!! we already have myspace and extremely annoying Yuwie, I know the demo is showing where you can place ads but still ads space should be very similar to facebook, other than that those ads could be irritating to users.

The template should be more organized? YES!!!! more user friendly? Of course! College/School/Job support? Why not?! Country of Origin? Si! (By the way I am in my late 20s and I have been heavily using the Internet ever since Windows 95, also I am an IT).

I am currently running a fast growing phpfox site using 1.6 and already purchased phpfox v2 but like J my opinion don’t matter around here and I know that if I there is no other template for the final release my current users will be lost and simply not interested in staying even with all the new cool features.

By the way, I am also working a new social/blogging site using Buddy Press - Facebook lovers and haters fall in love with it even when the project is far from prime time.

I do care about phpfox and know its potential. Long live PHPFOX!!!
    Thanks,

    Walter

  8. At this moment I am checking out RC2, I think I am in LOVE with it - The Foxbook look rocks!!! It looks fresh , neat, easy to navigate.

My previous comments were out of frustration regarding RC1

I will be willing to buy a more unique and exclusive template for my site.
I am also willing to pay for Professional translation packages etc.

    Good work!!!

The stage for adding features ended Im afraid, we are now fixing bugs and at most making minor changes to the modules. You are free to request this at the Feature Request forum where I know third party developers look into when creating their add-ons -> http://forums.phpfox.com/projectpost.php?do=addissue&projectid=1&issuetypeid=feature
